Running a fan club takes a lot of work, but it will also gives you the chance to promote a star your admire, meet other people who share your interest and maybe even meet your favorite celebrity.

Generally, the president and officers of a fan club do not receive a salary.  However, based upon performance, they do receive promotional items and giveaways.

Being a club president or officer, whether it is for a small group, or a nationwide organization, isn't easy. It is mentally draining, takes up a lot of time, and requires a lot of responsibility. It takes a special person to be a good leader. Not everyone is born with the skills of a good leader, but most people can develop those skills over time. There are certain things all good leaders possess. This article describes the necessary elements of a good club president. Read further if you feel you need help becoming the best club president you can be.

1st Set of Instructions:

    • 1

Show up to every meeting early. It is each member's responsibility to show up to every meeting, but it is the president's job to be early to each meeting. If possible, arrive before anyone else to set up the room and answer questions from early arrivals

    • 2

Learn as many club member names as possible. You should know your club well. If possible, you should know each and every person's name and use their names often. In clubs with hundreds or thousands of people, however, this simply is not possible. In this case, learn as many names as you can.

    • 3

Organize your schedule and paperwork. A good leader is an organized leader. Bring your planner to each meeting so you can write notes and check your calendar for conflicts.

    • 4

Include everyone in group discussions. Every member of a club is important. Make everyone feel important by letting them speak during group discussion. Don't dominate the conversation with your own agenda. Let others speak and you will be heard when it is your turn.

    • 5

Use majority rule for most situations. Of course the president of the club has final say over decisions, but majority should dictate most matters. It was a majority that elected you to office, and it should be a majority that makes most decisions. This prevents you from looking like a club dictator.

Tips & Warnings

  •

Meet regularly with other club officers to make sure you are all on the same page. It is best if these officer meetings happen right before general meetings.

  •

Don't let the power go to your head. Most of the time, club presidents are elected into their position. Don't make your members regret their decision.

2nd Set of Instrustions:

Starting and Running Your Club:

    • 1

Contact the artist or the artist's promoter to obtain permission to start your fan club, regardless of whether you want your club to be official or unofficial. This will help you avoid future conflicts regarding copyright or trademark laws.

    • 2

Send self-addressed stamped envelopes to popular fan clubs to learn about what services and products they offer and what fees they charge.

    • 3

Decide what your club will offer, and contact the artist or artist's promoter about merchandising.

    • 4

Estimate the costs of production, mailing and general overhead.

    • 5

Decide on a membership fee, if necessary, to help cover these expenses.

    • 6

Assemble the necessary office, publishing and accounting equipment.

    • 7

Organize a staff (either paid or volunteer) to handle publishing, accounting, merchandising, public relations and general administration.

    • 8

Decide on a format for your club's newsletter or fanzine, including appearance, types of information presented, and writers and editors.

    • 9

Try to get the artist to participate personally in your newsletter.

    • 10
